ROCK RANCH A CHRISTMAS BLESSING * 5 girls, 3 boys * (April 26)
DELLA ... 2016
DELLA ..... Getting Ready!
Della had 1 girl and 3 boys
FROM here in things changed a bit.
Blessing (first time Mom) was having trouble keeping up with the milk needs of 8 babes. Della (veteran) had too much milk for only 4! Mastitis (infection of the mammary) can ensue if the demand does not keep up with the supply ! So............. executive decision: We fostered 2 of Blessings babes over to Della. THEY HAVE A FEW changed COLLAR COLORS too so that there are no redundancies. (see RIGHT) These 2 Ladies (Mom Della and Blessing Daughter) are SO COMPATIBLE neither one minded the switch over. They are in the same room, whelp boxes right next to one another. |
BLESSING'S: (born Tues. 3/26)
Aqua boy Dk Blue boy Maroon girl Black girl Tan girl Orange girl and fostered to Della : Red boy Purple girl DELLA'S: (born 5/3) Pink girl (was purple at birth) Dk Green boy Yellow boy (was aqua at birth) Lime green boy The Photos from now on will be a mix of both LADIES and both litters. Della has a chain only collar, ears same color as body, sometimes looks a shade darker.
Blessing has a dark purple collar, 'eyeliner' and RUST ears. Della is the blue 'pool' and Blessing the white Whelp box. Above the LADIES take a break from the pups in the living room with our family. WELL DONE LADIES. Hunter is L upside down (Blessing's full brother) Della middle nearly asleep Blessing on RT (lap) |
Both Ladies eat plenty! Home made chicken soup (broth, dark chicken, sea salt) 2 x per day to keep them hydrated. I crush a potassium tablet and add it in to balance electrolytes (sodium and potassium). Grain Free high quality Kibble free choice plus 2x per day canned meat on top or mixed in (chicken rice veggies) or cooked beef or turkey or the "favorite" Scrambled Eggs... with canned pumpkin (has healing vitamin A and helps firm up stools).
Also, Bitch Pills (not kidding) with raspberry leaf to help reproductive system prepare (pre) and recoup (after), Doc Roy's Extra Daily Care vitamin and a Calcium supplement to help the Ladies ward off 'Milk Fever' (eclampsia) which can occur when the BLOOD CALCIUM level dips due to the drain of milk production back to back with the drain of the contractions of birth which also uses a ton of calcium. It can kill your bitch within hours. Symptoms are shivering or tremors, walking like they are drunk (staggering) and in a severe case what looks like a seizure.
As soon as the first pup is born we begin the calcium supplement and NOT BEFORE. ((Too early and the bitch may not process calcium correctly at all and land you at the Vet Hospital for an emergency C-section to save her life and hopefully the puppies)).
If your bitch gets too low in calcium, the vet can possibly save her with a calcium drip IV, however they MUST also be able to monitor the heart as calcium out of balance with magnesium can cause heart failure.

IT HAS BEEN RAINING FOR A WEEK! Finally, the girls and I can go out and ENJOY some much needed sunshine.
Week 2 Blessing, Week 1 Della
At 2 weeks old many changes happen. Blessings pups will start to try out their legs, which is so funny as they
walk-walk FLOP! The term 'roly-poly' really does apply to puppies of this age. Also, their eyes and ears will open. They can BEGIN to see and hear a bit. It takes some time for the eyes to clear, at first they are cloudy. This is normal. All the pups have had their tails docked and their dewclaws removed. These areas are treated with Tea Tree Oil over the next 10 days. The pups are wormed at 13 days old. We also do a follow up dose of Probiotic for gut health. The pups are weighed every single day the first 2 weeks of life. It is the ONLY way to know what is really going on! Sometimes a pup "looks like" he is nursing but he is not. The weight will tell! We chart their progress and anything we notice. We also chart Mom... temperature, bowel habits, frequency of nursing, eating / drinking habits etc. When I am brain-dead tired I can always look back at my NOTES! This bedding is SO MUCH NICER than Newspapers! Newspapers are smelly and give off terrible odors when wet. They also are loaded with Chemicals! and put black ink on the pups. We have a base polar fleece which has Velcro in the corners. (in the pool we duct tape) It is easy easy easy to change out the bed which we do daily. Then we lay towels on top to absorb the urine. The towels are switched out twice a day to keep everything dry. So important. My puppies are never a 'hot mess' ... always clean and fresh smelling and shiney. Most people don't post pics because... You guessed it. They don't want folks to see. There are thermometers in each box - we adjust the heat lamp up or down according to the weather outside and the temp in the room and in each box. We leave the window open an inch for ventilation. Newborns puppies cannot regulate their own body temperature. The 'nest' must be kept at 85 degrees the first week. Week 2 they can be at 80. Week 3 at 75 and so on. In the wild, dogs "den" in a tunnel or small cave. It always has a LOW CEILING to preserve the heat in the 'nest' which is full of organics (dried grass, leaves, pine needles etc) and Mom does not leave for the first 3 days. She has eaten the placentas and birthing fluids from the birth to A) clean house and keep any odor of the pups invisible to predators, and B) these sustain her in those first 3 critical days, while the pups learn to nurse. |
By the end of the same week the pups have grown exponentially ~! (see below)
